The painter and poet Camille Bryen (1907–1977) embodies a singular figure of lyrical abstraction and gestural painting. A pioneer of the Tachisme movement, his work unfolds in an interweaving of spontaneous impulses, vibrant textures, and unleashed energies, where pictorial matter seems to come to life on its own.

The exhibition Camille Bryen: Je peins je invites visitors on a journey through his pictorial universe, where gesture becomes the driving force of an intuitive and elemental expression. Rejecting the constraints of figuration, Bryen strives to capture what he calls the "infravisible"—that sensitive space between the tangible and the ineffable.

His canvases, often marked by layered chromatic compositions and signs at the edge of language, reflect a constant search for movement and freedom. Far from being mere painted surfaces, they are fields of experimentation where light, color, and matter engage in a dynamic dialogue.

Named after the poem Je peins je, written by the artist in 1955, the exhibition explores the evolution of Bryen’s gesture in light of his relationship to poetry, shaping an art freed from academic conventions.

At a time when painting is in perpetual reinvention, Camille Bryen reminds us that the act of painting is, above all, an inner adventure—a sudden emergence of the unknown within the visible.
