Olivier Debré
Olivier Debré was a French painter associated with lyrical abstraction, celebrated for his large-scale canvases where color became the central subject. Born in Paris and trained as an architect, he was influenced by both Impressionism and Abstract Expressionism, yet forged a highly personal language he called signes-figures — abstract marks evoking landscapes, emotions, and atmospheres.
From the 1950s onward, Debré developed monumental color fields marked by sweeping gestures, often inspired by natural forces such as rivers, mountains, or light. His works were exhibited internationally, including in public commissions for opera houses and cultural institutions. Today, he is recognized as one of the key figures of postwar French abstraction, with the Centre de Création Contemporaine Olivier Debré in Tours dedicated to his work and influence.
